Southgate Opera presents La Traviata.
La Traviata: the story of a woman ‘gone astray’ is the most popular of all Verdi’s operas. Verdi described it as a story “for our times” and it was indeed unusual in having a contemporary setting.
The idea of a heroine of easy virtue who finds true love only to sacrifice her happiness for the sake of honour is given added poignancy because she is dying.
The story reaches out across the generations and has relevance even for our times in the twenty-first century.
