Theatre Trip: Matilda the Musical

Dress Circle Tickets Weds 28th Feb  Ticket: £55 includes coach
Coach leaves Furzefield Centre 5.15pm

Matilda the Musical is a magical offering from the acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company!

Hailed as a musical triumph and recipient of an Olivier for Best New Musical, this fantastic piece of theatre is currently showing at the Cambridge Theatre on London’s West End.

Based on the beloved children’s novel by Roald Dahl, Matilda the Musical tells the story of a young girl of incredible intelligence who is at odds with her TV-addicted parents and a diabolical headmistress. Bullied or just plain ignored, one day the rejected and neglected Matilda Wormwood discovers that she has telekinetic powers…

A funny and sharp book by Dennis Kelly and lyrics and music by celebrated Australian comedian Tim Minchin add a new dimension to this children’s favourite. Rather than being derivative of the original tale, Matilda the Musical adds new depth to the story. There’s all the nastiness of Dahl’s novel, with a little girl whizzed across stage by her pigtails and a boy made to eat a giant chocolate cake, but this production also revels in the consolation offered by books and the transformative power of the imagination.

Matthew Warchus’ production is witty and intelligent as well as exuberant and big-hearted. Matilda the Musical is a fantastic depiction of the disorder of childhood and the importance of making one’s own way in the world. Backed by sensationally creative sets and props and an extraordinary cast of child and adult actors, this musical truly sets Dahl’s story alight.

An Evening with Ossie Ardiles

Flat Floor Seating  £16.50
Raked Stalls   £19.50
VIP      £49

Potters Bar plays host to an evening with World Cup winner and Spurs all-time great Ossie Ardiles hosted by Micky Hazard.

Forever remembered for wanting to 'win the cup for Tottingham', Ossie Ardiles did just that in an amazing chapter in the Club's history.  Keith Burkinshaw completed the coup for Ardiles and compatriot Ricky Villa after the pair, particularly Ardiles, starred in Argentina's World Cup triumph in 1978.  Superbly skillful and determined for such a slight figure in the English game, Ardiles immediately forged a dream team in midfield with Glenn Hoddle as Spurs won two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup in 1984.

During the evening Ossie and Micky will provide an interesting insight into their playing days at White Hart Lane and their opinions on the game in general, not to mention the current Tottenham team.

During the evening there will be a raffle with some great prizes up for grabs plus the chance to ask Ossie and Micky questions and to purchase some fantastic Spurs memorabilia.

Tickets are great value for money starting at just £13.50 and there is also an exclusive VIP package available for £49.00 which includes priority seating, meeting the stars prior to the show, receiving a signed memento of the evening plus having a photograph taken with these Spurs legends.

With only a limited number of tickets available and to avoid disappointment it’s important to book now for what promises to be a fantastic night of entertainment for all football enthusiasts.

Martine McCutcheon

Up Close and Personal with Martine
Thurs 3rd May  8pm
Tickets: £25

Martine and her acoustic band perform songs from her album 'Lost & Found' as well as hits and highlights from her glittering career.  The show will include a Q & A session.

Martine McCutcheon, first found fame as Tiffany Mitchell in Eastenders in the 1990s, before releasing her platinum-selling debut solo album ‘You, Me & Us’ in 1999 containing the No. 1 single ‘Perfect Moment’. West End and TV roles followed and along the way she became the nation’s sweetheart. In 2003, Martine memorably played Natalie opposite Hugh Grant in ‘Love Actually.’

Now 41, happily married, mother of a 2 year old, the time felt right to return to the studio. Martine has co-written most of the songs on the new album ‘Lost and Found’ with her husband, the multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jack McManus, and she has never sounded better!

Martine is back not only musically; she also reprised her role in the Comic Relief reunion of ‘Love Actually’ earlier this year and has just wrapped a film with Alan Davies called ‘The Bromley Boys.’

However it’s music that’s her main focus. First single ‘Say I’m Not Alone’, is a song like nothing Martine has ever recorded before; big, bold, brash, merging clanging guitars, thumping drums and a hard hitting lyric. Other album highlights include the rocky ‘Any Sign Of Life’, the beautiful ‘Stay With Me’ (which is a duet with Jack) and album closer ‘Rebellion’.

The album is a deeply personal record that deals with everything from relationships to Martine's debilitating illness that saw her unable to work. “Life brought this album about very gradually,” explains Martine. “It was a really unconscious thing; I started writing the songs at a time in my life when I’d lost everything.”

An Audience with Kate Humble

Fri 1st June  8pm
Tickets: £18

Kate Humble is a writer and broadcaster specialising in science, wildlife and rural affairs. Together with her husband Ludo she lives in permanently muddy jeans on a smallholding in Wales.

Join Kate for a fascinating talk about her life working with animals as well with wildlife, the far flung places that this has taken her to and the inspiring people she has met on her travels. There's also a unique chance to go 'behind the camera' as Kate describes how the programmes are made along with some lovely anecdotes about the filming

The second series of Kate's popular BBC programme Back to the Land will air in 2018 and will be the latest in a long line of programmes Kate has presented for the BBC including Springwatch and Autumm Watch, Wild Shepherdess, Yellowstone: Wildest Winter to Blazing Summer, Curious Creatures and Extreme Wives with Kate Humble. Her latest book ‘Friend for Life:  The Extraordinary Partnership between Humans & Dogs’ is out in paperback.

She had what she describes as a 'proper childhood' - building camps, racing snails, climbing trees, interspersed with trips to A&E to patch up things when they broke.  At 18 she left school and home, and worked odd jobs for a year to fund a year travelling in Africa, which, she says, taught her far more than she would ever have learnt at university.

In 2007 she and her husband Ludo moved to a smallholding in Wales and in 2011 set up 'Humble by Nature' a rural skills school on a working farm in the Wye Valley.  They live with a variety of feathered and furry livestock and three dogs.

Thurs 13th Sep  8pm
Tickets:
Balcony     £13.50
Flat Floor Seating  £16.50
Raked Stalls   £19.50
VIP      £49

On 13th September 2018 the Wyllyotts Theatre in Potters Bar plays host to an evening with two of England cricket’s most famous characters and Captains Graham Gooch and Mike Gatting.

The statistics speak for themselves, as two of England's greatest batsman Gooch and Gatting played a combined total of 197 Test Matches, scoring over 13,300 runs.

Graham Gooch was one of the most prolific run makers top-flight cricket has ever seen. After he retired in 1997, the statistician Robert Brooke calculated that Graham had scored 22,211 runs in List A cricket which, added to his 44,846 first-class runs, put him ahead of the great Jack Hobbs.

Mike Gatting was a natural, a point recognised by the England selectors when they sent him on tour as a 20-year-old, in 1977-78. But it would take seven more years, and 54 Test innings, before he made his first century with 136 in Bombay, an innings of such guts and determination that the British press broke its rule and applauded. Then there was no stopping him.

Graham and Mike will take a nostalgic look back on their illustrious careers with numerous antidotes from on and off the field of play; not to mention their opinions on the current state of English Cricket and the game in general.

The Wyllyotts Theatre will be open from 7pm with the main event starting at 8pm.  At the half time tea interval there will be a raffle with some great prizes up for grabs.  There is also a chance to ask Graham and Mike questions and to purchase a specially commissioned print which they will both sign on the night. It should be noted that the VIP session commences at 7pm.

Standard tickets are great value for money starting at just £13.50 and there is also an exclusive VIP package available for £49 which includes a front row seat, meeting the stars prior to the show, receiving a limited edition signed print and having your photograph taken with Graham and Mike.

With only a limited number of tickets available and to avoid disappointment it’s important to book now for what promises to be a fantastic night of entertainment for all sport enthusiasts.

We play host to an evening with one of Arsenal Football Club’s most famous and much loved characters Charlie George.

From 1969-1975 Charlie made 179 appearances scoring 49 goals and is rated at number 9 in the Gunners greatest 50 players of all time.

Charlie was a local lad, a maverick and is a true Arsenal legend. Born in Islington, London, George attended the local Grafton, Holloway Road and New Middleton Schools.  Charlie supported Arsenal as a boy and played for Islington Schoolboys before joining Arsenal in May 1966 and turning professional in 1968.

Deep into extra-time at the 1971 FA Cup final, with the scores locked at 1-1, Charlie sent a thunderous 20-yard drive beyond the reach of Ray Clemence in the Liverpool goal. It sealed a first ‘Double’ for Arsenal.  The celebration that followed – with Charlie falling to the ground with his arms outstretched above his head - is one of the most iconic images in the history of Arsenal.

To host the event is another Arsenal fans favourite, Perry Groves who made 203 appearances for the Gunners scoring 28 goals.  Charlie and Perry make a fascinating double act for what promises to be a very entertaining night out.

At half time there will be a raffle with some great prizes up for grabs.  There is also a chance to ask Charlie and Perry questions and to purchase a specially commissioned print which they will sign on the night.
